Homeless No More breaks ground on 30 affordable homes in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WLTX) — Homeless No More broke ground Tuesday, Oct. 13, on Grand Village, a new affordable housing community that will provide 30 homes for families with children in Columbia.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at 3003 Two Notch Road, the site of the former Grand Motel.

The project is part of Homeless No More's Live Oak initiative, which focuses on providing attainable housing for families with children.

Grand Village will include 30 homes with affordable rents, along with the James E. Christopher Community Center.

The community center is named in memory of James E. Christopher, a longtime Homeless No More board member and advocate for homeless families.

The center will serve as a hub for children's mentoring programs, financial literacy classes and community gatherings.

"Every family deserves a place to live, a neighbor to know, and a community to be part of. Grand Village makes that possible," said HNM President and CEO Lila Anna Sauls. "This project has been almost three years in the making, and none of it would have been possible without the dedication and generosity of our incredible partners."

The groundbreaking brought together Homeless No More leadership, elected officials, neighborhood representatives and community partners, including United Way of the Midlands and South Carolina Housing.

The development represents the latest addition to the organization's efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities for families with children in the Columbia area.
